IN YOUR LOVING MEMORY MRS JUSTINA ONYEMELUKWE : One Year Anniversary

Late Mrs. JUSTINA

In January 2018, five women benefited from the Burning Candles Campaign Ireland. They were supported with 10, 000 Naira to undertake a smear test. Smear test is free in European countries but women have to pay to get one in Nigeria. Currently, cervical cancer is the 2nd killing cancer in Nigeria. There is still poor awareness on its prevention and socio-economic and cultural mitigation against women taking a smear test in Nigeria.

Each benefitiaries made an online video to promote awareness within their own circle.

Many women are going to die this year as a result of cervical cancer. We need to continue to promote awareness and encourage women to take a smear test. Smear test is proven to be the top prevention method as it allows for early detection of the HPV virus and treatment.

Cervical cancer can often be prevented by having regular screenings to find any precancers and treat them. Preventing precancers means controlling possible risk factors, such as:

  • Delaying first sexual intercourse until the late teens or older

  • Limiting the number of sex partners

  • Avoiding sexual intercourse with people who have had many partners

  • Avoiding sexual intercourse with people who are obviously infected with genital warts or show other symptoms

  • Quitting smoking

In loving memory of Mrs Justina Onyemelukwe who died as a result of cervical cancer in 15/03/2017.

If you are interested to help please make an online video on cervical cancer and post using

#BurningCandlesCampaignIreland and

#CervicalCancerAwareness
